Indian mehndi

Indian mehndi is the umbrella term for the henna traditions of the Indian subcontinent — most prominently Rajasthani, Marwari, Mughlai, Lucknowi, Marathi, and South Indian regional styles. The shared signature is density: Indian patterns fill nearly the entire available surface with small repeated motifs (paisleys, buti, jaal nets) layered into one composition. Application time is longer than Arabic or Pakistani equivalents — thirty to ninety minutes for everyday work, two to four hours for bridal.

Five primary ones. Rajasthani — fine jaal (net) patterns across the back of the hand, paisley walks down the fingers, full coverage. Marwari — dense layered paisleys with ornamental borders, the Mughal-influenced style of the Marwari trading communities. Lucknowi — light scattered buti motifs derived from chikan embroidery, less coverage than Rajasthani. Marathi — swirling vines and Deccan-style florals, regional to Maharashtra. South Indian — heavy floral coverage especially for Tamil and Kerala bridal work, often combined with foot mehndi mirroring the hand.

Thirty to forty-five minutes for a typical front-hand stylish design; sixty to ninety for full-hand stylish; two to four hours for bridal Rajasthani or Mughlai work covering both hands and feet. Indian patterns are slower than Arabic or Pakistani because the small-motif vocabulary requires more individual placements per square inch. Bridal Indian mehndi is the longest single application in the catalogue.

Three things. First, motif scale — Indian uses small repeated motifs tiled across the hand (buti, jaal, fine paisleys); Pakistani centres around one or two bold motifs (rose, paisley) with khafif filling between. Second, line weight — Indian uses one consistent fine line throughout; Pakistani uses bold central lines and fine khafif filling at two distinct weights. Third, fingertip handling — Indian brides cap fingertips solid; Pakistani brides leave tips bare with rose knots at the second knuckle.

Jaal is the fine net pattern that fills the back of the hand in Rajasthani bridal work — typically a diagonal grid with a small motif (a dot, a flower, a paisley) at each grid intersection. Drawn well, jaal reads as a continuous textile texture rather than discrete elements. It is the most labour-intensive technique in Indian mehndi and the most reliable signal of bridal weight: if you see a net pattern across the back of the hand, you are looking at Rajasthani-derived bridal mehndi.

The motifs are within reach — start with a single paisley, a small lotus, or three buti scattered across a palm. Indian density is harder. Filling a hand with small repeated motifs while maintaining a steady fine line throughout is a high-skill technique. For a first Indian-style attempt, choose Lucknowi-influenced light buti coverage rather than Rajasthani jaal. Skip the bridal-weight density until you have applied twenty Indian-style hands.
